What it's for

If pressure comes and goes, or the machine spikes when you release the trigger, this is where to look before you look anywhere else.

Unloaders stick, the seat wears, and the spring loses tension. They are rebuildable and they are cheap relative to the pump they protect. Do not turn the pressure up to compensate for a failing unloader — that is how a cheap part becomes an expensive one.
