Hot water vs. cold water: when the heat actually pays for itself
A hot water machine costs several thousand dollars more. Here is how to tell whether your work justifies it.
The short version
If the soil is organic or petroleum-based — grease, oil, protein, road film, food waste — you want heat. If it is dirt, mud, clay, or general weathering, cold water is genuinely fine and you should keep your money.
What heat actually does
Heat lowers the viscosity of oils and fats and breaks the bond between the soil and the surface. Cold water at high pressure will move grease around and can polish it into the substrate — you end up with a surface that looks worked-on rather than clean.
Anyone who has run a hot machine on a restaurant pad after fighting it cold stops arguing about this within one job.
The work that requires it
Fleet and trucking. Food processing and dairy. Kitchen exhaust and hood cleaning. Equipment yards and heavy machinery. Anything where the customer's inspection standard is written down somewhere.
The work that does not
House washing and soft washing — these are chemistry-and-dwell jobs, and heat accelerates evaporation, which works against you. Most concrete and flatwork. Decks and fences. General exterior weathering.
The honest arithmetic
A hot water machine is not a general upgrade. It is a machine that opens specific categories of work.
So the question is not whether hot is better. It is whether there is hot-water work near you that you are currently turning down or under-bidding — and whether there is enough of it to carry the payment. If you can name three customers you would go after tomorrow with a hot machine, the math usually works. If you cannot, spend the money on flow instead.
