Getting rust stains off concrete without etching it.
Rust removal is a chemistry problem. Solve it with pressure and you will leave a bright etched patch that looks worse than the stain did.
The failure mode here is specific and it is worth understanding before you quote the job: you remove the stain and leave behind a visibly etched, lighter area in the shape of where you worked. The customer now has a different problem, and it is one you created.
Why pressure does not work
Rust staining is iron oxide that has penetrated into the pore structure of the concrete. You cannot blast it off the surface because it is not on the surface. What you can do with pressure is remove the cement paste around it — which is etching, and it is permanent.
The approach
- Wet the whole slab firstNot just the stain. A dry slab absorbs product unevenly and you get a halo. Wetting the surrounding area also limits how deep the acid goes where you do not want it.
- Apply the product and let it workDwell time is doing the job. Resist the urge to hit it with the wand because it is not moving fast enough.
- Agitate gentlyA brush, not a turbo nozzle.
- Rinse the entire area, not just the treated spotThis is what prevents the visible patch. Rinse well past where you worked, and rinse thoroughly — residual acid keeps working after you leave.
Set expectations before you start
Deep, old rust staining sometimes does not come out completely, and the honest thing is to say so in the quote rather than discover it in front of the customer. A 90% improvement that was promised as 90% is a happy customer. The same result promised as complete removal is a callback.
